Juan Sevilla Sevilla
Hello everyone.
My name is Juan Sevilla, I'm 27 years old and I'm from Ulldecona (Tarragona-Spain). I'm attached to the NGO Humana People to People as a Development Instructor.
After 6 months working and training in Denmark, working as a teacher with teenager with social and family problems, with the acquisition of knowledge concerning AIDS, Malaria,diseases, political and social situation in Africa, history, Portuguese .. ...... - in February I'm going to embark on this fascinating project called * Children's Town, located in Maputo (Mozambique).
Since February until August 2010, I will be living with about 800 children working as a teacher. Children whose have lost their families because the war, diseases (AIDS, Malaria, TB), have been abandoned or their families cannot take care of them.
Africa includes some of the poorest countries in the world. In much of Africa south of the Sahara, harsh environmental conditions exacerbate the conditions of poverty. Dry and barren land covers large expanses of this region. As the poor try to eke out livings through farming and other subsistence practices, they exhaust the land, using up the soil nutrients needed to grow crops. Over time this has led to desertification, a process in which once fertile land turns to desert. During the late 20th century, desertification contributed to famines in a number of African nations, including Somalia, Ethiopia, and Mali. Political instability and wars in many sub-Saharan countries have also contributed to poverty. As a result of such factors, the number of people living in extreme poverty in sub-Saharan Africa grew from 217 million in 1987 to more than 300 million in 2008.
Facts:
-
About 120,000 African children are participating in armed conflicts. Some are as young as 7 years old.
-
Children account for half of all civilian casualties in wars in Africa.
-
One in six African children dies before the age of five. Most of these deaths could be prevented.
-
Nearly one third of children in Sub-Saharan Africa are underweight.
-
In sub-Saharan Africa, measles takes the life of a child nearly every minute of every day. An effective measles vaccine costs as little as $1 per child.
-
Between 12 and 14 million African children have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS.
-
Nearly 2 million children under 14 years old are HIV positive.
-
43% of children in Sub-Saharan Africa do not have safe, accessible drinking water.
-
64% of children in Sub-Saharan Africa do not have adequate sanitation.
-
Only 57% of African children are enrolled in primary education, and one in three of those does not complete school.
-
For every 100 boys there are only 83 girls enrolled at primary school.
-
200,000 child slaves are sold every year in Africa. There are an estimated 8,000 girl-slaves in West Africa alone.
Being one of the poorest countries in the world, where life expectancy are 42 years, 68% of its population lives below the poverty line, 73% depend on agriculture ..... . it's clear that help is needed. And how aid doesn't come, it's lost on the way (corrupt leaders) or simply rich countries are not interested in helping because there is no mutual benefit (oil or other resources)........., must be NGOs who promote and fund the aid.
The intention here is that everyone feels a part of this project. With the donations and auctioning off items belonging to known sports athletes -some of whom work directly with the project as Adam Raga (6 Times World Indoor&Outdoor Trial Champion) or Oriol Romeu (FC Barcelona and Spanish Team football player) - we may help these children to improve their living standards in regard to:
* food ( not much and always the same)
* school reforms
* school equipment
* mosquito-nets (anti-malaria)
* medicines
*........... etc.
From this website and with Joan Grau's help from Ulldecona, you'll be informed periodically about the work done and where and how we spend the donations.
Before finishing, I would like to say thanks all those people, associations, football teams and factorys involved in this project. I would like to extend the most sincere thanks for their cooperation and support since the very beginning of this project. I hope that with all their help and efforts we will see great results in the future to come.
